Hop Off, Start Walking

There's art that needs creating
A heart that needs deflating
A sunbeam that could use a voice
A flame that burns without a choice.
A star for wishing explodes into confetti,
Finally able to release the burden of dreams
Back to the burdened dreamers
So that they might see clearly
Eyes closed, hearts open
And be free to create their own tomorrow.
Following only the path of their brilliant soul
Tracing the patterns of inner glow
As they press on through the darkness
Often muddy, sometimes clean
And into the world as they damn well please
Sporting scratches and scars as reminders to live
From the life they once floated through on dreaming wake
Half asleep, unfeeling, forgotten and lonely
No more.

Pretty Things and Shitty Things: A Matter of Life and Breath

Have you seen the sun shining?  It's beautiful at half past noon.  The breeze is blowing somewhere southwest of here across two lovers hiding beneath the boardwalk in the sand and through the hair of a lonely girl gazing out at the ocean while holding a notebook and pen and contemplating the purpose of her existence.  The stars are twinkling someplace, too... somewhere far beyond the daylight.  We live in a city that never sleeps, always half awake and sometimes dreaming.  The world itself running on caffeinated cups that keep the cogs turning in markets and minds is exhausted and pressing forward all at once every day... and somewhere a chipper bird is chirping its first melody into the air amid a nest of recently broken eggshells high up in a tree somewhere... while a woman gets a blister from wearing a new pair of high heels to an interview in the Financial District.  Something to think about while all the world is constantly thinking, scheming, debating... everything breathes.  We inhale.  We exhale.  Life goes on.  Keep living.

RECIPE: TURKEY CHILI PASTA

ORIGINAL RECIPE:  After a lovely lunch at the Gee Whiz Diner yesterday, I found myself left with half a Turkey Burger and limited enthusiasm about eating it all by itself later on.  I considered a burrito or crumbling it into sauce, but neither seemed quite appetizing enough for my extravagant flavor palate.  That's when I had the idea to utilize my left-over burger (and bun) to make some Turkey Chili based on my natural cravings.  Veggies and spice were a must to include in the recipe, as is typical with most of my food, and of course I needed some carbs and added heat.  Thank youuuuu pasta!  What resulted from this craving-concoction was a deliciously flavorful, subtly spicy, fiesta of a pasta dish!  A dish that I, my friends, am delighted to share with all of you.  This is sure to be a hit with the whole family.  Now let's get cookin!

RECIPE: TROPICAL DETOX SMOOTHIE

RECIPE: We're half way through the summer, can you believe it?  It seems like just yesterday we were spring cleaning and preparing to put away the fluffy winter wardrobe while shopping for some funky new flipflops!  Fun in the sun (for me at least) is centered around seeking out tons of great food, attending as many BBQs as there are grills around, and enjoying a few late night drinks from time to time.  The sun's staying out later and frankly so am I.  After spending the first half of the summer celebrating and picking up extra shifts at work, I have decided to spend the second half actually getting some R&R and really enjoying myself in the healthiest ways possible for my body and mind.  The first step is to close out July with a BRAND NEW tropical DETOX!

THE PRAJJALI PROJECT

“Yoga for all, we all are one!” is the motto I have for all my classes, so naturally when I heard about the launch of The Prajjali Project, I wanted to show my loving support.  Can you imagine the opportunity to use one all-access pass to attend various types of yoga classes with a variety of teachers at all different studios across the country?  Well, that’s their vision.  Not only do they want their efforts to help yogis to try new things and expand their minds and practices, but they are a fundraising effort to offer veterans the healing benefits of yoga.

RECIPE: CINNAMON-SUGAR GRILLED PINEAPPLE SPEARS

RECIPE:  Grilling season is approaching (if it hasn't reached you already!) so let's kick it off right with a juicy-sweet treat that's quick, easy, and absolutely delicious... Cinnamon-Sugar Grilled Pineapple Spears.  I've seen a few variations to the recipe, but the basics are always the same: three ingredients.  Pineapple, Cinnamon, Sugar.  Easy.  You can spice it up however you please (I included Cinnamon-Sugar) but the bottom line is simple.  Slice, Mix, Grill, Eat.  Read on to find out my personal recipe for a dessert that will wow you with flavor, fun, and simplicity.

Simple Subtle-Fire Pesto

ORIGINAL RECIPE: If you've been following my blog, you know how much I love pasta AND pesto.  Well, today's no different.  Here's a veggie-friendly (& vegan friendly!) nut-free pesto recipe that has a very subtle kick to it... but you can fire it up (or cool it down) as you please.  It tastes great with any pasta, especially my favorite: Trader Joe's Spinach & Chive Linguine!  So read on and start cookin'!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"What if I told you that ten years from now
your life would be exactly the same?
I doubt you'd be happy.
So, why are you so afraid of change?"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR. SEUSS!

The very first time I was chosen to teach yoga, I was given one hour's notice.  I walked into the room hoping to remember everything that I'd learned, everything that I wanted to say and convey.  There was no time to be nervous, it was too little time to have even a thought of worry.  They probably planned it that way because of my fear of public speaking... and thank goodness they did... because as soon as the students entered the room and I began to great them, my heart started to race with excitement and my face was smiling as much as my palms were sweating.  However, the second I said, "Child's Pose, please." it all melted away and the only thing left was the students in my mind... guiding the students.  I let my memory speak for me and my love and care for these 50 or so strangers listening intently on their yoga mats for every detail pulled me through with not a hint of the Self left to get in the way.  When it was over, I was amazed at what had just happened.  I'd only taught half the class before my tandem teacher took over, but it didn't matter.  I did it.  I left myself behind, cared only for the students, and was warmly welcomed.  I spent the rest of class slowly walking around the room... adjusting and encouraging the students as the other teacher taught.  His class was a lot harder than mine was going to be and you could see it in their faces when they looked to me, silent... but my excitement was so enormous that I could only smile in return and received a smiling reflection.  When class ended, I returned to the front of the room to read the final quote and ring the quartz crystal singing bowl.  I flipped through the book quickly and opened to a page... and at the top was this quote:

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

It was exactly what I needed at the time and hopefully it touched one or four or forty-five of those fifty or so students lying peacefully in savasana.  They're great words to live by... since what you learn on your mat you take into your life and what you deal with in life you work out on the mat.  They were an inspiration to be myself and to have that be enough.

So, on this birthday of dear Dr. Seuss, I wanted to share that story... and maybe that quote will be something you needed to hear... maybe it will bring you a smile... and maybe you will share it with friends and family... and perhaps together we can make a change, promote love, and help each other love ourselves a little more every day... giving way to a more peaceful future.  And if you feel stuck at this time for whatever reason in your life, take these yogi-friendly words of advice from a man with a wise and brilliant imagination...

“If things start happening, don't worry, don't stew, just go right along and you'll start happening, too.” -Dr. Seuss

Hats Off to you, Sir!

THE FOLLOW YOUR BLISS PROJECT - 2013

“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you
where there were only walls.”  ― Joseph Campbell

FOLLOW YOUR BLISS 2013 - In case you haven't already noticed, the world didn't end last month although a noticeable shift in attitude can be felt around us.  It was not "the end of the world" but the beginning of a new world whose seeds are just beginning to sprout... seeds planted at different times and by different people through good intentions and positive energy.  I am feeling the shift myself and have made some major life changes in my own pursuit of happiness.  I am learning to trust, learning to let go, and learning to have faith in what feels right and true.  I am learning to follow my bliss and I urge you to do so as well.  There is only one chance to live each moment of your life, so why not live them to the fullest in happiness and joy?  The only thing truly holding you back is yourself.

I bring to you the Follow Your Bliss Project... little images every day or so that show someone following their bliss.  They are little sketches and drawings that I do in my free time when I feel particularly inspired or perhaps need some inspiration, but nevertheless they are blissful little images filled with hope and faith.

If you would like to submit your blissful images to this project, I will gladly add you to the project website located at http://followyourblissproject.blogspot.com/ where together we can find inspiration as we help inspire others to live life to the fullest.  Please comment below if you would like to participate.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!
